Grief and the Lung

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the Lung does more than govern respiration: it is the organ that helps us let go. It is associated with the emotion of grief and sadness, reminding us that learning to release is part of the art of living.

Grief is not limited to the loss of a loved one. In the TCM view, it can arise in all those moments when we need to say goodbye to a life stage, a place, a relationship, or even a former version of ourselves. Each time life invites us to close a cycle, the Lung is present, accompanying that process of purification and transition.

The Lung and sadness: a necessary emotion

In our culture, sadness is often perceived as something to avoid, hide, or quickly overcome. However, in the Chinese tradition it is understood as a necessary and wise emotion, whose function is to cleanse and clear the interior, just as fresh air ventilates a closed room.

When the Lung is strong and its Qi flows harmoniously, sadness moves without stagnating. We are able to cry, express, and allow the emotion to manifest and fulfill its cleansing role. After that process, an inner space appears that is clearer, lighter, and more available for the new.

In contrast, when the Lung is weakened, sadness becomes heavy and persistent. Instead of helping us release, it accumulates and hardens, affecting both body and mind. Then the body begins to send signals: shallow breathing or a feeling of tightness, chest oppression or constant fatigue, dryness of the skin and mucous membranes, greater susceptibility to colds, allergies, or immune imbalances.

These symptoms are the echo of an emotion that cannot find a way out.

Habits that sustain

Grief needs time and space, just like breathing. It cannot be forced or rushed, but it can be supported. Sleeping well, maintaining gentle routines, and reserving moments of quiet allow the Lung to recharge, giving sadness its natural pathway.

Small gestures such as walking outdoors, practicing conscious breathing, or opening the chest with gentle yoga postures help the Lung regain its fluidity. And with it, the emotion transforms.
